Opossums are all show. They are actually very gentle and won't hurt you. They also eat ticks! They hiss and show their teeth when threatened.
Raccoons are tough and can get rabies but if not cornered (or trapped) they will leave you alone too. We just let one out of my friend's garage.

I have both and they frequent my compost pile and cat food dish. I just wish the raccoons would stay out of my fish pond.
