It appears I'm the slacker of the group. My college is sparse & sporadic, so little formal education, but I've been a fan of science of all kinds & a voracious reader for most of my life. Started off on Asimov, when he was still with us, Sagan & Omni then Discover when they first came out, along w/ Scientific American & almost anything accessible intellectually to the layperson. My sense of wonder & curiosity remains strong as well as my interest in fact & discovery. So, here I am!

I'm pretty much a lay person myself once again, having retired more than a decade ago, and not following the specialist literature. It's lay reading for me now. New Scientist is very good, and the online Quanta magazine. Some of the Ted talks, too.

One can never stop learning. I know some really dumb PhD's and very well-rounded high school drop outs. It's how you think, and whether you use critical evaluation. Formal training is great, but it must go together with a right kind of personality in my opinion. Smart, curious, inquisitive "school slackers" are more interesting than 4.0 gpa memorization machines. Just my few cents.
