From the little I know there are various forms of organic, depending on how hard you are prepared to work at it. It can be the simple growing different crops and tilling the plants back into the ground with ducks to keep the bugs down and provide some extra nutrients. To biodynamic which seems to involve a bit of mystic vibration of the cosmos apparently, [blog.agrihomegh.com] [biodynamics.net.au] Personally I feel that organic is a bit kinder to the environment (I do not believe that the food tastes better) and would be cheaper than paying a company for their product each year. As I grew up in an area where the "fogger truck" would come by as we stood at the bus stop waiting for the school bus (spraying a chemical into the air to get rid of the mosquitoes) I can still to this day taste that chemical in my mouth when I feel ill. I believe the chemical they used has since been banned for use in Australia. I am reluctant to use those types of products I would rather lose a few plants/crops to bugs. I have a composter for anything the chickens do not eat. I am trying for a worm farm but it is hot here and you can lose them all when the ambient temperature gets too hot. One word for you: Hydroponics

Organic farming is good, but we would never be able to produce in the level we are producing now with it.
It can work for small areas with logistical problems and small spaces. But we do need big, mechanized, energy intensive farming to be able to feed 7 billion people.
But organic farming is advancing, maybe it will be able to develop technology to compete.

Break it down into two areas,
Arable: Artificial fertilisers leaching into groundwater is a real concern. Other than that doesn't make a lot of difference. Less yield from same area so not helping much with population crisis. Claims for more healthful produce have not stood up to scrutiny.
Livestock: agree that subtheraputic doses of antibiotics are a problem. Should have been banned across the board a long time ago. However losing the premium for "Organic" meat leads many farmers to resist effective medical intervention for animals suffering from disease, turning inspect to homeopathy and other discredited alternatives. Ironic that the motivations behind organic farming include a concern for animal welfare when the end result is often the reverse.
