Apparently, it's a commonly held belief that colonialism was of no net benefit to the colonists, but the other way around.
What do you about this belief?

I was once punished by caning at school for describing colonialism as a euphemism for conquest and oppression and was described as an insult to my ancestors.
Today my son would be accused of "white guilt" if he said the same, perhaps one day we will admit that whatever "benefits" were enjoyed by those we conquered, they were first and foremost for the colonists and oppressors and presented no help or comfort to the indigenous people until we pissed off ignominiously, claiming falsely our departure to be a gift and beneficent gesture of love and friendship.
A trick we learned from the Romans, Normans and Jutes. At least the Vikings had the decency to admit they were screwing us over and that it was not for our own good.

Sounds like nonsense to me.

The UK striped the colonies of everything they could get, took the land and imposed an alien culture on the people, refused to educate them adequately to keep the alien system going, then walked out.
