And yet older people overwhelmingly vote Conservative... [theguardian.com]
It's nowhere near as clear cut as that. It's only the 70+ bracket where voting Tory even reaches 50%
I dunno, there does appear to be a very strong correlation between age and voting conservative, with a further correlation with ethnic group too. A very interesting articles from the BBC:
There is a strong correlation for sure, but I'm 62 and myself and virtually all my friends and family have never voted Tory and never will. I regard myself as a working class man and I am mystified why anyone on an average wage would vote Tory (regardless of Brexit).
Statistics show that people become more conservative as they get older, the other factor is that a lot of natural Labour voters will not vote for Jeremy Corbyn. He is perceived as too far left by large numbers of moderate left voters...Liberal Democrats will pick up some of these votes, but I fear that some natural middle ground Labour voters who want Brexit will vote either Tory or Brexit party.
That was my thinking as well. I thought I might just be paranoid!!!
I wonder how many of the Save The Whale and Greenpeace marchers of the 70s and 1984 Miners supporters have sold out.
Always makes me think of Hip To Be Square by Huey!
@OwlInASack I can’t vote for any of them because none of them stand in my constituency...the Labour Party has repeatedly refused to stand any candidates in Northern Ireland ...so much for their democratic principles! I will probably be left with the “Hobson’s Choice” of Sinn Fein or DUP unless Alliance or the Greens decide to field a candidate in my constituency. I will vote for either of them...but the other two? No I can’t vote for either of them in good conscience. As far as not forgiving the Lib Dems...I think considering they stopped the worst excesses of the Tories from happening and it was their policy of raising the Income Tax threshold on PAYE which the Tories now claim as their own..you have to take political parties in the round...and not just pick on specific things they have done which you didn’t like. They are the least worst option at the moment, because they’re the only party which will definitely stop us from leaving the EU if they get enough votes...I’d have thought that policy alone would be enough to back them.
@OwlInASack The reason Labour don’t stand here has nothing to do with their stance on a united Ireland and everything to do with not wanting to stand against the SDLP which they consider to be their sister Party. This is to totally ignore the reality of Orange and Green politics here which means that Labour supporting Unionists will not vote for a Nationalist party, which the SDLP is. They are willing to put up Secretaries of State for Northern Ireland..and Mo Mowlem was one of the best we ever had, so it’s somewhat hypocritical of them not to stand here..then we could actually have a Sec.of State who was elected by us, instead of an English one imposed on us. It is now enshrined in international law that Ireland will be reunited when a majority wishes it, nobody in the Labour Party disagrees with that...the Irish Constitution recognises it, so no excuse for the Labour Party not to stand candidates here in N.I.
the let the tory press think for them unfortunately
