Black Lake

--for John Frazier--

The boat glides across the black lake
a lantern in the bow
the lantern drawing insects
the insects drawing bats from the
night sky, swooping down from nowhere.
The insects also draw from the dark water
a rippling stream of small fish
so thick you just reached in and
grabbed one— as they churned
along, following the light across
the lake in the dark night.

All this life in the darkness,
I think, sitting amazed in the boat
while you, fearless, lead on in this
adventure, talking all the while.
Yesterday you got out of the car,
put down your towel, and did a backflip
off a cliff so high I wouldn’t even
jump off it.

You always knew more, had been more
places, done more things—were in the
process of showing me the world.
You always knew where you were going.
Even on that last trip you took,
alone in the house, to the kitchen
with the rope in your hand—
to head off across the dark water
where I had never been.
