Every since I borrowed my first library recording of Lord Melody's calypso music, I've been a fan. His lyrics are wickedly clever and funny, and his late 1950s/early 1960s recordings are classic.

Later, on many trips to the Caribbean, I picked up a lot of recordings of more contemporary Caribbean music that are not available in the U.S. - not on Amazon or Ebay or anywhere. Soca music (Preacher is one artist) is the popular offshoot of calypso, and chutney music (Anand Yankara is one artist) is the East Indian version of soca. (Trinidad, the birthplace of calypso, has almost equal-sized populations of African and Indian descent.)

• Lord Melody - Si Senor

• Lord Melody - The Jumbie [the zombie]

• Preacher - Julie Mango

• Anand Yankara - Caura River

I really like the Soca music. I’m quite familiar with music with a calypso beat because we have quite a large population with Caribbean heritage who either themselves or their parents or grandparents emigrated to Britain from the 1950s to the 1980’s...naturally they brought their music with them. The annual Notting Hill Carnival in London was started as a festival by Jamaican, Trinidadian and other Caribbean immigrants as a celebration of their culture, food, music and dance. This is great music ...and even though I’m sure it originated from a time of hardship, poverty and the legacy of slavery, it sounds sunny and joyous and reflects the sunny climate, and the resilient and sunny nature of the Caribbean people.
