2021 Census and Religion
This article interested me as it relates to the issue of the difference between what i call the functionally religious (practising) and the notionally religious ( just religion in name only ) -- essentially recording real religiosity.
As it says,
"While 60 per cent of Australians indicated a religion in the 2016 census, other research suggests that, when expressly asked if they belong to their religious organisation, 62 per cent of Australians say they don’t."
Personally i think a question like, " Are you really religious in a practising sense or just say that out of habit - yes or no?" would be revealing, but that'd be too much to expect.
There's a reference to the ABS conducting another survey to determine real religiosity. That'd be interesting.
Still, it would be nice to know the consensus on whether or not the number of angels that can dance on the point of a needle is inversely proportional to the number that can dance on the head of a pin.
Given the mass hysteria and svengaliesque mesmerism it's amusing to contemplate the implications for political beliefs, ethical perspectives, economic systems and anything involving an opinion (like this).
I was deliberately slow out of the barriers in answering this question because while I wanted to record atheist, I didn't want to have the tally disappear into "other".
No religion is both a statement of belief and a protest.
If individual belief was explored in an extensive survey then it's 13 to 8 on that the ethereal "higher power" would be god.
I'm not happy that this question is optional.
What is the person's religion?
Top of the list : No religion
This belief is set to top the polls cf. 30% in 2016.
Worship of the great No has been climbing ever since arses pointed down.
The wording of questions can influence response.
Do you really, truly ruly believe in fairy stories?
