A few interesting things about the Australian Ratite (Emu) is that only the male incubates the eggs then cares for the young until they are old enough to survive on their own. You'll almost never see female Emu wandering around with male Emus unless it is mating season, Emus are known for being very curious birds in the wild, if an emu sees a light shining in the night, chances are it will go to investigate it and IF, though I wouldn't recommend it, you want to see a wild Emu close up in the daylight, just get behind some bushes and either kick up clouds of dust or simply wave a piece of brightly coloured cloth, any Emu within 3- 400 yards or more will come over to see what is happening.

I remember the "tame" ones at Eric Worrell's Reptile Park at Wyoming had a habit of picking pockets for the bag of treats sold at the entry kiosk. If you didn't have any the emus would often try to peck the top of your head. I know their claws, like kangaroos, can rip your guts out.

@FrayedBear Yeah I've actually seen 'roos rip a dog open from neck to groin with one swipe of their hind foot and an emu kick a dog as far as 20 feet across the ground and bust its back in the process.
Back in 1989, I was riding back to Broken Hill in the cab of a loco when an Emu took a 'flying' leap as we went past, ended up in the cab with me, the driver and the observer, then started kicking the shit out of everything and anything, luckily we all managed to escape to the Drivers cab at the other end of the loco and lock the emu in the front cab.
When we finally arrived in the Broken Hill Railyards, the leading cab of the 80 class loco was a complete disaster area with windows smashed out, seat ripped to shreds, emu feathers and emu turds spread everywhere, those crazy 'bush chooks' are definitely something to avoid at all costs.

@Triphid They taste good in pies though!

@Triphid 😉😁😋

@FrayedBear What the emu meat, the feathers or the turds?
Have you ever eaten emu before, I have plenty of times, it's oily, and goes through you like a runaway train.
Give me 'roo, wombat, goanna, snake, beef, lamb or pork any day.

@Triphid I am perhaps thinking of ostrich. The pie that I ate 5 years ago at a local show did not taste oily. Perhaps it wasn't emu or ostrich.
