Back in April, I posted this pic of a male pileated woodpecker hunkered down during a snowstorm in a dead tree on the edge of my property. I had hoped that he was scoping out the place for a potential nest site. I've never seen the female pileated, but she must be around. Nice. I'm doing my best to not cut down dead trees. Not so easy ... the aesthetics and all.

Impressive birds, not very common either. No mistaking the jack hammer sound they make when they are pounding away on dead trees either. One has punched a huge hole in the brand new electrical pole in front of my new house, right underneath the pole mount transformer that provides power for me, looks like I'll be getting a new pole less than a year after this one went in.
