Back in April, I posted this pic of a male pileated woodpecker hunkered down during a snowstorm in a dead tree on the edge of my property. I had hoped that he was scoping out the place for a potential nest site. I've never seen the female pileated, but she must be around. Yesterday two nearly-fledged babies were hanging their heads out of the tree cavity. I'm amazed at how secretive these guys are, for their .
Impressive birds, not very common either. No mistaking the jack hammer sound they make when they are pounding away on dead trees either. One has punched a huge hole in the brand new electrical pole in front of my new house, right underneath the pole mount transformer that provides power for me, looks like I'll be getting a new pole less than a year after this one went in.
