I like sculpting faces. This one was raku-fired and, unfortunately, cracked across the top of the face, at the hairline. Aw! sad. But then I had an inspiration based on the Japanese ceramic tradition of kintsugi, (where you embellish and beautify a crack by infilling with gold) and sacrificed this metallic scarf by gluing it inbetween the crack ... and I've loved it ever since.

Great technique. I use it myself sometimes, but not with such artistic flair. Mostly just to highlight the natural cracks and crevasses of the wood that makes up the base structures. I want to try shou sugi ban techniques soon, but that requires a lot of space and a blowtorch. But soon... Great work! Very beautiful!

@dede18 it autocorrected it. It is actually spelled shou sugi ban. I've since corrected it. It should be much easier to find now... lol. It's basically burning away some of the softer wood to make the grain stand out then dying or varnishing the wood with color to highlight the grain further. It's the equivalent of using ferric chloride to bring out the grain pattern in Damascus steel. Hope that helps!

That looks great! I am kind of a sucker for mixed media, so I see the crack and it's fix as a completely positive development. If you hadn't said anything, I would have thought it was part of the original design

@dede18 That's the thing about raku' firing the fire is going to give you what the fire wants to give you. The temp change, oxygen, fire so maybe fortune had nothing todo with it but the elements decided this is what you get - make the most of it. YOU DID!!!!
