Like Palindromeman, I'd also say he's the writer who inspired me to get started. I really enjoy his accessible, unpretentious style, and he's far and away the author who I've read more than any other (and from whom I pilfer the most ideas). I don't love every moment of every book — Blaine the Monorail could do without his riddles and 'It' could do without the pointless, graphic kiddie sex — but when he's good, he's simply excellent... The Stand is one of my favourite books ever.
I was a child when I read "It" - I think that may have made that scene more relatable for me.
@JenBeberstein Thinking about it, I understand how it's not at all 'pointless' in the narrative of the story, and I can say that it doesn't offend me in any way, but I just came away from it thinking 'really? that's the best you could come up with for the situation?'... It seemed a bit of a an unnecessary diversion. Great, great book though.
@DaveMania I can understand how you felt that way. As an adult, I do see it differently & I was glad it wasn't included in the recent movie. As a damaged child, that scene seemed to fit the situation perfectly.
Stephen King is nothing less than a literary god. I studied English at university and was belittled at a tutorial when I mentioned this.
I wonder how many of those people are as successfully published SK - oh, wait, none...
SK inspired me to write. I think he is awesome.
I agree with everything you said!
