A writer's fascination for words should be powerful indeed.

An interesting anecdote. When Norwegian fishermen went to the extreme North of UK during the second world war, they spoke to the locals in Norwegian. The locals, as in Shetlanders and Northern Scotsmen, answered in English. They understood each other!
(It's mainly due to the way the Scots pronounce their words.)

Some fraternisation between the Vikings and the locals too in times of yore, maybe coming back through genetic memory. Excuse my gibberish.

@Garbonza many English words are Viking in origin. In Norwegian, a knee is kne, but the "k" is pronounced. Northern Scots also pronounce the "k". House is pronounced by the Scots as "hoos", similar to the way Norwegians pronounce their word, "hus". And so it goes on.

@Petter Reminds me of King Knut, who was anglicised Canute. I had an old friend from Dornock on the northern coast of Scotland -- however, he lived most of his life in Dublin and then here in New Zealand so didn't show any really quirky pronunciation traits. He did show disdain though, for my German pronunciation, so obviously took pride in some kind of Northern European oral heritage.

Words are hugely important but only the basic building blocks in a writer's toybox. Needs punctuation, dialogue, arranging and rearranging sentences and paragraphs in order, rhythm, rhyme, alliteration...
