Another free prose piece rewritten:
A Man ... Dying
Old black iron door rattles as it rolls back on worn rails,
Allowing two men in darkest blue to enter.
I refused the priest who was with them. His time is better spent
On believers whose needs are far greater than mine.
I walked the hall, feet scuffling a bit, flanked by two
Grim faced guards who mumbled placations at me,
As if their hollow words would somehow make it easier.
Out on the yard under dawn’s peach blush on a passing cloud's underbelly
Stood seven in a line so straight, so formal, so dour, faces grimly sad.
I heard the roar,
As they said I would.
Sudden pain quickly dulled,
As they said it would.
A flood of seering brilliance, white with dancing colors
Overwhelms my mind’s vision.
That they could not know.
Then darkness rushed in. It was quick and starkly quiet.
I smell the pungent odor of powder burned
And hear voices muffled with no understanding.
There is a ringing incessant in my ears
And a growing numbness in my head.
All is fading now and what remains of my mind wonders,
Do they know how quickly it happens?
