Many people in the USA know nothing about this event, which happened only 5 miles from where I live.
Here is the URL to the book that was written by the very first journalist to reach the scene, and who broke the news to the world.
The following day the US government admitted to the incident - they sort of had to.
Four H-bombs from a B52, which collided with a tanker that was re-fueling it, fell upon the tiny and remote village of Palomares. Three fell on the land, The fourth fell into the sea and was eventually recovered, 3 months later, by a miniature, remote controlled submarine. The year was 1966, at the height of the cold war.

At the time, Chris Morris was a free lance reporter in Madrid, doing commissions for the BBC. He later became a full time BBC news staffer. He was the duty news reader when the IRA assassinated Lord Mountbatten. He covered the war in Cyprus where he was blown up by a land mine which killed most of a group of BBC reporters. After years with the BBC he moved to Sky News, and was their main News reader for 10 years. His face has therefore appeared in the homes of millions of people. He is a fascinating friend, who lives about 5 miles away, and is still fit and active, aged 80.
