I just read an article in the NY Times concerning megachurches, those with over 10,000 congregants. Most are flush with money, doing little for the general public than, let's say small Unitarian churches and temples. Pastors have private jets at their disposal and live in luxury. Many of these churches are "non-denominational" Christian churches which would appeal to many sects of Christianity, not just the bible-thumping Baptists. Most members are "true believers" and prosperity Christians, believing that faith in their god will bring them wealth if their belief is strong enough and are convinced that giving away their hard-earned dollars will bring that prosperity.
