My first foray into the online great debate community was over my introduction to the bizarre presuppositional apologetics. This notion that, to know anything, you have to presuppose god. That, without god, you cannot know anything. It had me in a conversation with an adult asking me how I knew 2+2=4. Rinse and repeat the, "how do you know," question and you've got the M.O. of presuppositional apologetics. On the plus side, it lead me to searching for answers and I now have met and befriended amazing people with philosophical backgrounds.
What is the weirdest apologetic you've encountered?
Not sure if this is an actual apologetic, but another atheist once told me that a Xtian told him that reading the bible too much would turn god's word into Satan's lure. I asked, but he said the guy did not explain how much was too much.
Dead jew on a stick is gonna save me if I do the mamba in his blood.
Created the world in six days, and on the seventh he rested. --- The idea of one day isn't the same as what we think of as a day.
My physical therapist has two masters and gobs of ongoing education but OMG he's YEC.
It's so bizarre, I don't even want to disagree but want to understand him. Kinda like finding a one legged hyena that can still hunt. He's very intelligent and understands diplomacy is an essential part of patients exercising at home, so he has all the tools to overcome the fairy tales. He simply chooses his own biases, even against his own church doctrine, above education.
Dinosaurs having small nostrils, which make them breathe harder, which creates friction, which catches on fire, in defense of dragons or some creature in the book of Job.
Might be me. God is not actually a conscious being but, human consciousness is a part of God. Similarly, God does not love but is the attractive quality of love that draws everything together to bring order out of chaos. Your friends understanding of God is merely so far unenlightened similar to the biblical peoples understanding. Yes I've been into my wife's medically prescribed cannabis again.
In defense of slavery in the bible I often hear, "But it was so long ago. It was a different time back then."
How are people not embarrassed confessing that they believe it was okay, at any time, to own another human being?
This apologetic makes me think that person is a complete moron. Not very mature of me, but I can't prevent the thought.
Athena, I hope you never figure out a way not to think that's a moronic statement. Because it is.
I will say, though, that there is a lot of bullshit in the Bible that believers distance themselves from based on the notion that it's safely in the distant past, occluded by the mists of time. That makes it seem remote from the modern world where such things would be laughed out of court. Many fundamentalists for example say that miracles are "not for today", that they were used to authenticate the preaching of the gospel before the scriptures were complete, but ceased once the witness of scripture was available. This makes the miraculous seem less fabulist and more ... for lack of a better word ... legendary. Or perhaps romantic. Anything but ridiculous.
@mordant
I agree. Don't misunderstand. The statement is moronic. I said that, from that, I conclude the person is a moron. He/she could be the greatest mathematician of all time and all I can think is "what an idiot."
That's why I was calling myself out on the maturity level of that statement. To be fair, we are all probably idiots in some way.
And yes, some more than others.
When they want to dismiss some embarrassing part of the Old Testament, tell them that that's great, because then they're not obliged to keep any other embarrassing part--homosexuality is evil, for example. If they reject that, they've dropped "because the Bible says so" and must justify why they're picking and choosing that way. Maybe they're using God like a sock puppet, to echo what they already believe?
John cheese apology on the Movie Fish name Wanda. Being hung out a window.
I do, I offer a complete and utter retraction. The imputation was totally without basis in fact, and was in no way fair comment, and was motivated purely by malice, and I deeply regret any distress that my comments may have caused you, or your family, and I hereby undertake not to repeat any such slander at any time in the future.
Otto: OK.
“Dinosaur bones were put here to test our faith.”
“God made the Earth already aged.”
“Slavery back then wasn’t slavery, but indentured servitude.”
God created red-shifted light from other galaxies already in motion so that they only seem far away.
Presupp is a farce. Real christian philosophers won't touch it. Check out this video for presupper lolz.
I hope that I just imagined the above.
Oh yes, I am familiar with these characters. Darwin's Deity is one of the ugly ones. Floyd (the other speaker in this video) has some great videos on the subject. A friend of mine, Ozymandias Ramses II also has great videos that unpack and debunk this apologetic.
@Takohsrool Yeah, I am familiar with DD and his escapades. I first came across him about 6 years go when he frequented paltalk. Back then he was a WLC fan boy specialising in the Kalam(ity). I've been a thorn in his side since then. He uses discord a lot these days. Always trawling for his next victim.
The one that pops to mind is fairly recent … both a rabid trump supporter and a religious freak.. Both his parents are/ were progressive university ‘professors,’ so perhaps to spite them, this little freak has embraced the opposite views. As we had some heated, yet respectful face to face debates, I soon realized - I wasn’t telling him anything he didn’t already know … it was simply information and perspectives he didn’t what to acknowledge..
Problem for him was, my expertise in a field he honestly admired made it very difficult for him to doubt my ‘expertise’ in anything else. Finally had to cut him loose, though.. Just as I have all but one trumper I know.
Well... died without completing the sentence. All I remember was "I didn't knew you guys.........................................................................."
