Yes, but only if it isn't authoritarian and atheism isn't the main priority.

I did not interpret this question to mean that residents could not be religious in their private lives if they somehow developed beliefs... only that the official position of this hypothetical country was non-theist.

6

Absolutely. An atheist country would mean that we would be a secular nation, truly practicing the separation between state and church. Religion would be a private practice in the home or place of worship. It would not be in our schools, city councils, or in the white house. Laws would be based on logic, not magical thinking or biblical prejudices. I would hope that eventually, religion would be relegated to a place of obscurity, a curiosity, such as the Greek myths.

I would only support such a country, if a new island magically popped out of the ocean one day, and was deemed a new atheist country. If an existing country was converted, I would be completely against it. Because peoples would have to be displaced, or be forced to "convert". But really, the diversity of personal beliefs is a good thing, as long as law isn't based upon religion or a persons faith.

I believe that one day all countries will be atheistic but, people still need to have the right to believe what they want.

Agreed. Imposing restrictions upon beliefs has never worked in the past. The beliefs have continued to survive, and often blossomed into extremism under such conditions.

5

Nope. I would fight and be willing to die fighting to prevent any law that imposes restrictions on thought even if I agree with those thoughts. Anyone voting yes really needs to rethink there position on this. This is a gift waiting to bite you in the ass.

5

I thought we(usa) were supposed to be a secular country.

Somebody please tell those christians in Washington who chip away at that line of separation every day

I don't want atheism to be the focus of a place i'd support, rather people who i trust make good decisions, being an atheist doesn't mean you make proper decisions

I think such an atheistic country would be just about the epitome of desirability provided it was reasonably democraticly run.

I am amazed, especially on this site, to find that the current vote is 13 "yes" to 8 "no." As I read through the comments the principle reason for voting No is that such a country would deny the freedom of religion and somehow become a totalitarian state. An atheist state would have to evolve over the course of many years. Persecution and prohibition is no way to create such a state. But religion would have to be constitutionally banned from having any influence on secular society or its government. There would be a wall, a fence, a moat and an army separating church and state. All candidates for public office would have to state their religious affiliations and would be unceremoniously removed from office at the mere mention of a supernatural deity or religious scripture. Such references would be removed from all public buildings, currency, mottos and inaugurations. A constant narrative as to the fallacy of blind faith as compared to established and proven reason would permeate the news media and government proclamations. Of course, all religious organizations would be taxed at the same rates as any other corporate entity in recompense for the benefits of living in a free society that allows them to exist despite their providing cover for the evils spawned by the zealots among them. Religion would be marginalized to the nutsy-cuckoo fringes of society and eventually wither and die. Though some die-hards may cling to their delusions indefinitely they would have no influence on mainstream society. An atheist society is a worthy goal for which we must all strive.

If said country was a country populated predominantly by atheists by matter of choice not enforced I would support that country but in no way would I move to exclude others of differing beliefs.

I agree with others here- a country where any belief system, of lack there of, is either encouraged or instated would be ultimately disastrous. This question leads to another though...

In the unlikely event a country enforces atheism as law, how would that be enforced? The possible answers to that scare me. We see how religion is instated and enforced in some Middle Eastern and Asian countries... Brutality is the trademark of governmental control, and I’d hate to see it associated with atheism.

I think the important thing would be to live in a "free" country. Freedom of religion should also mean freedom from religion. A country where religions and other superstitions could not influence rules, laws, and education. People would be free to practice their beliefs in privacy, but would not be allowed to influence children until an age of self reason, and only by consent of the child. If this country's residence were all or mostly atheists, I think the intellectual level would be extremely higher than other countries and therefore less need for wars and greed. I am all for it, but freedom would be the key word for me.

Sounds good to me, where do I sign up because it certainly isn't here.

I oppose the mingling of police power and thinking(and by that I mean the policing of thoughts). I want to live in a country where the vast majority of people are agnostic/atheist but never in a country that could say "only."

I did not interpret this question to mean that residents could not be religious in their private lives if they somehow developed beliefs... only that the official position of this hypothetical country was non-theist.

What are you, Francis Bacon? 🙂 (i love bacon btw... food and philosopher). No. I don't think it is possible for us to have one right now. I certainly wouldn't want atheism imposed on a nation. It never could be imposed effectively. Religions would simply move underground, be less regulated by more relatively level-headed clergy. If we tried to impose atheism, this would be an environment for the magical-world-view once again, more than ever. It would be counterproductive to try to impose atheism today.

3

It would a form of denial of free thinking or free speech.
What if a child born in this country became religious?

I thought the United States was supposed to be an atheist country being a secular government and all lol. I would love to live in an atheist nation.i would feel real happiness and freedom, oh yes I would go to war fight and die for an atheist nation.

The founding fathers of your US of A are Free Masons. So, go for it! ATHEISTS RISING!

No I don't like the idea of anyone stamping any unnecessary label on a nation. It's as bad as claiming a whole country is Christian or Muslim.

Btw, Paul & Markhas, Saudi Arabia is the first country to grant citizenship to a robot.

If only we could find a country without a flag.

I have to vote no because I don't think an "atheistic country" would be as idealistic as we might think. Sure we wouldn't be weighed down by religious dogma but atheists are in no sense a united group. We differ on issues about feminism, capitalism/socialism, free speech, - hell - we can't even decide on science! I can tell you right now the Argon-esque atheists would not get along with the Hemet-esque atheists. And that is not even considering if there would be a litmus test for atheism, would agnostics be allowed? What about atheists who believe in ghosts? Ones that accept crystal healing or horoscopes as the truth? I can't believe that an "atheistic country" would focus solely on science, art, and the development of human technology.

Now, would I support the formation of a truly secular state? Yes. Completely. I think a country that is purely secular, where all religions are treated equally but not specially and not persecuted by the government, would be the best "atheist country".

I was born an Atheist just as all species are born without theism. An Atheist nation would begin protecting infants from religious sexual amputation. To protect 4 square inches of sliced off flesh would be every baby boy's birthright. Every child would be taught science and the history of all violent faiths. Women would be protected by law from sexual mutilation and rape. No woman would be forced to stay pregnant. An Atheist nation would be like bee hives in large meadows and mega glass domes would protect ecosystems from climate extremes and left over pollution caused by greedy genocidal misogynistic theocracies. For Atheists who might devolve into old religions or invent new cults like L. RON HUBBARD did, only adults would be allowed such proselytizing as free speech does not include terrorizing children or brainwashing bait and switch tactics inside places unobserved by Atheist neighbors. An Atheist nation would be democratic peer review based decision-making subject to environmental impact law. And none of this could possibly happen on earth as long as violent greedy cabals rule through monetarism and theocracies weaponized technology. ...I am proud to say I have never converted a single religious victim away into "atheism" ....our Atheism is predicated upon critical thinking, evidence observation and pacifism. No Atheist thinks for others like Ruuuusssssshhhhhah Dingy Crazy LIMPboss radio cult liar spawns dittoheads. ...no Atheist bribes anyone with alleged after life "heavens" nor terrorizes anyone with eternal fire pain threats.
