We - as atheists - have successfully learned to overlook the fact that our calendar is orientated by the birth of a bloke who might or might not have existed ... quite a feat
It's a fact it's linked to Jesus and Christianity, two reasons why it's inappropriate. But then changing a calendar is a pretty laborious job. Imagine all the changes we have to make in all our history, personal records and the computer systems that practically run our lives everywhere! So simply changing BC to BCE (Before Current Era) and AD to CE (Current Era) without changing the numbers (years, dates etc) is the best solution.
it doesn't seem to have been a big deal when the gregorian calendar was introduced in 1582. but i do understand that nowadays people like to have life as simple as possible, therefore many just keep believing: the mind being too sluggish to self-generate.
Well, the silliness of basing it on the birth of someone we don't know existed or when he was born even if he had lived, is somewhat mitigated by the fact that, I don't need to write a number as large as 4,479,874,002 or something like that. Can you imagine doing this everytime you write a check or fill out a form asking for your year of birth?
right, & that would probably lead to further major squabbles & skirmishes within the global (western) community. i might just have given up writing checks at all
Hmmm... Its true the Gregorian Calendar was named for Pope Gregory, and is sometimes called the Christian Calendar. But I think they stuck his "birthday" in there where they did in an attempt to usurp the long established pegan holidays. Not the other way around - in other words I don't think the calendar was oriented around Jesus. The Jesus story was oriented around pagan and celestial dates. But yes, Christian lore is far to influential in defining our seasonal themes. I have yet not learned to overlook it... It still pisses me off!
yeah, christmas & easter are just a farce to me. i grew up with an atheist father. poor man! every year he ended up pissed blind under the christmas tree. not me though.
