Maynard James Keenan is an atheist. He is the lead singer and chief lyricist for Tool and A Perfect Circle. I enjoy his music.
On "The Doomed," Maynard James Keenan scrutinizes a world where sinners are exalted and the good are cast aside. The song boasts a lumbering drum beat and instrumentals that move from simmering, eerie and sparse to ragged hard rock dramatics. "Doomed are the meek," Keenan growls as the song builds to it's blistering conclusion. "Doomed are the merciful/ For the word is now death/ And the word is now without light."
We each to our own.
I find A Perfect Circle even less interesting than Tool. Quality work to be sure. Just not to my taste.
This is the brutal truth of the twentieth century. If we continue down this path of polarized thinking then we surely are doomed. This world must be big enough for the liberal and the conservative. This world must be big enough for the religious and non religious. This world must be big enough for man and woman. This world must be big enough for the animals, and the plants. This world must be big enough for all the living. We must be small enough that all can live on this big world.
Maynard has never been one to shy away from blasting religion. Hell, look at "Judith"
Thanks for sharing this link, much appreciated.
Judith is an awesome song. There’s a story behind it.
Judith was Maynard James Keenan's mother's name. She was a very religious person. One day she had a stroke that left her in a wheelchair partially paralyzed. This stroke only strengthened her belief in God - something that Maynard found to be pretty ironic. The lyrics in this song reflect how he felt about the whole situation - "It's not like you killed someone, It's not like you drove a spiteful spear into his side, You praise the one who left you broken down and paralyzed." He's saying that his mother was a good person who believed in God and yet this is how she was "thanked."
@balou Yeah, even though he didn't accept that she could believe in something so asinine as God, he still loved his mom.
Both parts of the song 10,000 days was about her.
About 28 years trapped in her condition to pass away.
