A good book on this topic is "So Help Me God" by Forrest Church

I'm sure there will be an interesting story behind Jefferson's great granddaughter selling his bible to the Smithsonian. But how fantastic that he cut it up. Reminds me of two prurients editing a doctor's lecture on good marital relationships by taking out the bits where he discussed the benefit of marital sex for pleasure not just procreation. The tape was to be listened to a group of distressed newly separated/ divorced people of mixed religious beliefs.
