How to automate computer save organization?

Is there software that will help me stay (get) organized how I save files? Could work with tags or by using folders, but more than stars. I hate to save pictures, pages, and pdf's all into my download folder. If I can organize the files as I save the files, I at least have a sliver of a chance of being able to go back and find some useful tidbit. Computer/life skills/organization/science question.

I agree. Right now I save everything to my desktop and manually organize it from there. I hate it when a download automatically saves to an unknown destination. There has to be a better way.
