Modern ideas of hell have more to do with Hellenistic influences and the writings of Dante than with the Bible. To the point that some of the apparent references to hell are poorly or mis-translated to fit with these notions. Yes the RCC "invented hell" in a sense by pushing these ideas forward but broader Christianity is complicit in that they mostly buy into it and promote it.
The exceptions would be those who believe in universal reconciliation (UR) which is very much a minority position in Christianity but seems to be gaining more traction over time. This is some version of the notion that at least in some ultimate sense, everyone will be "saved". At the least, this reduces hell to a finite rather than eternal punishment, or in some cases eliminates it altogether.
Then there are annihilationists (like the Jehova's Witnesses) who don't believe sinners go to hell, they simply cease to exist and miss out on eternal bliss.
Of course the other (and in my view better) exception is those of us who think the bible is all BS to begin with.
I submitted the link but did not see if it is going to play. Its really good.
