Prayer at Work?

Is it legal to allow prayer at work parties, while disallowing other religions, or nonreligious to say words before eating commences? I was denied the opportunity to speak, basically what is an Atheist grstefulness poem for the food.

depends on the agency. if it is a privately owned business (non-gov and doesn't receive govt funds) then there isn't much you can do.

No.... why do it.. it just causes turmoil and frustration and a work place is not a dam church already, when are people going to get that part! Drives me nuts when people do that stupid praying before they eat. I work for what I get.. I am fortunate to have a job, a roof over my head and food on the table.. no thanks to anyone else but my own self doing.

I can't speak for the US, but here in Australia, there would unlikely be any specific legislation about it, basicly it would be up to the consensus of each work place to come to some arrangement.

My dad used to say, " Thanks to myself, working hard so that we can eat today." Good enough for me.

When I was working at an insurance company in Virginia, we had a party. Before it commenced, the supervisor stated that he knew that not everyone was a Christian, but he was sure it was okay to pray before the meal. I had already complained about the supervisor several times to HR, and nothing was ever done so I didn't see any point to complain this time. If I remember correctly (it was many years ago) I filed a complaint with the EEOC. As far as I know it went nowhere, however I was fired from that job not long after this happened.

Sadly, I think when we hear 'prayer' in the U.S., it's a synonym for 'Christian.' In my part of the country, Christianity is everywhere and very pervasive so it's not worth fighting every time. I'm looking for a job and signed up with one agency I thought took it to the extreme. Even though I had specifically said I didn't want to go to companies with a strong religious policy, one of the first e-newsletters I got from them gave the schedule of the daily prayer sessions they had in their offices so we can ask god's blessing on our search. Sigh.

So, if it's a large company you may have a chance with HR but probably not. I didn't need my agency because there are other headhunters, but I guess you have to decide if it's worth it to find a different job, or if you want to try to adjust the thinking in your office.
