LINK The Indictment of Julian Assange Is a Threat to Press Freedom | The Nation

"Is Assange a journalist at all? That’s where the argument usually begins, and too often ends. As NYU law professor Stephen Gillers points out in his penetrating and essential new book Journalism Under Fire: Protecting the Future of Investigative Reporting, the most far-reaching federal shield law proposed in recent years to protect reporters—the Free Flow of Information Act, introduced by Senators Chuck Schumer and Lindsey Graham in 2013 but never passed—explicitly wrote WikiLeaks out of the equation, denying protection to outfits whose “principal function” is publishing “primary source documents…without authorization.” The dividing line, says Gillers, is “editorial judgment”: What defines WikiLeaks as non-journalism is that it is an undiscriminating document dump. For years that same argument has allowed many traditional news organizations to keep their distance from WikiLeaks’ overtly activist publishing."

"There’s a huge myth being misreported about today’s indictment of Assange,” journalist Glenn Greenwald tweeted today. “The claim that Assange tried to help Manning circumvent a password to cover her tracks isn’t new. The Obama DOJ knew about it since 2011, but chose not to prosecute him. Story on this soon.”

“Holder chose not to prosecute Assange based on the same info Trump DOJ cited,” Greenwald added.

“The weakness of the US charge against Assange is shocking,” tweeted NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden. “The allegation he tried (and failed?) to help crack a password during their world-famous reporting has been public for nearly a decade: it is the count Obama’s DOJ refused to charge, saying it endangered journalism.”"

Julian Assnge is one of the he main reasons we have drumpy! Every week, "next week I will bury Hillary with my revelations"...which went on for Months & Months! "The boy who cried Wolf" ring any bells? But the "villagers" never woke up!

Team Hillary shot themselves in the foot by being corrupt.

@WilliamCharles okay, so Trey Gowdy & a whole panel of hostile Repugs could find Nothing, after extensive wishing they could at taxpayer expense. But You have new evidence? I doubt it.......

If he obtained the info from a knowingly illegal source or method (hacked intel from a foreign power) then he deserves the charges. The press has every right to report the new, they cannot however break laws to obtain the news.

Freedom of speech and freedom of the press.

I'm all for it and against his indictment.
