"The dramatic end to Julian Assange's asylum has sparked curiosity about his seven-year stay inside Ecuador's Embassy in London that was marked by his late-night skateboarding, the physical harassment of his caretakers and even the smearing of his own fecal matter on the walls of the diplomatic mission.
"It would have tried the patience of any host. But for tiny Ecuador, which prides itself on its hospitality and spent almost $1 million a year protecting Assange, it was also seen as a national insult.
"We've ended the asylum of this spoiled brat," a visibly flustered President Lenin Moreno said Thursday in a fiery speech explaining his decision to withdraw protection of Assange and hand him over to British police.
"From now on we'll be more careful in giving asylum to people who are really worth it, and not miserable hackers whose only goal is to destabilize governments."
i've seen a lot of vitriol against assange but never once noticed anyone praise the one service he provided that americans should be grateful for: the disclosures of Chelsea Manning; which prove that the mighty american empire killed 1000s of innocent ppl in their barbaric drone attacks.
the sad truth is that most americans would rather not know this inconvenient truth & despise Manning & Assange for divulging it.
ayes, that was a good thing.
Regardless of what you think of Assange as a person; this is a blow to freedom of the press and great news to governments who want to keep feeding its sheep misinformation.
Could not agree more!
I agree, but why the entitled ugly American behavior while there and they are protecting him.
@gigihein Seems to me Assange has already been in prison for 7 yrs. It's little wonder he has gone a little coo-coo
@MsDemeanour the smearing faces can be dementia or psychosis. zit doesn't seem same to do it intentionally when bei thing protected
I believe Wikileaks is a valuable thing, but creating it does not absolve Assange of being a seemingly deeply dislikable man. It appears he may still have questions to answer about that rape charge, too: [bbc.co.uk]
He's a computer nerd....he's probably on the spectrum. The Trumped up rape charges are dropped
@MsDemeanour The rape charge was dropped because he was in the Ecuadoran embassy which made it impossible for the case to continue and not because they were proven to be false, however. I don't believe Assange should face imprisonment for the leaks which were in the public interest; but if the Swedish authorities feel he should still be subject to an investigation for rape, he ought to be investigated.
I've gone back and forth on what I think about this guy and Wikileaks over the last several years. On one hand it's good to shed light and have transparency on our government but I have to think his reasons were never that noble.
Plus, it appears that he's a malignant, narcissistic turd.
@novelty said it well on another thread. We need a Wikileaks, we don’t need a Julian Assange.
@Green_eyes no one deserves to go to jail because they're unlikeable
@MsDemeanour it’s not that I don’t like him. I did at one time. He’s a hacker that started out with good intentions and then it became all about him. He used a young man(at the time) then left him to rot in prison. He’s been in Russia’s pocket for a long time.
@Green_eyes Sometimes it isn't easy to know who are the good guys and who are the bad guys. I'm pretty convinced there are no good guys......except maybe New Zealand and Iceland.
@MsDemeanour There are no good guys. Everyone's got it coming to them at some point.
@TrailRider Most people are good. It's just that the good don't seem to be attracted to leadership. That's probably why I'm a socialist.
@MsDemeanour I agree most people are good... most of the the time.
