the fact is that the standard of living for americans peaked decades ago. this false prosperity that many are desperately aspiring to has been financed with ridiculously low interest rates & big budget deficits that have caused the national debt to go exponential.

The "American Dream" is mostly a Cold War invention, designed to make people in Third World countries hanker for Capitalism. But if ever there was a real American Dream, it was the desire of early Americans to own their own land, and not have to work for anyone but themselves.
It could have shortened to half the length, but that is a modern problem. Trying to present everything to the lowest intelligence group rather than giving the majority credit for having a brain.
Society relies on possessing "haves" and "have nots". Slaves, women, immigrants, etc. Since slaves and women are now fully emancipated, and immigrants are restricted, the "have nots" have to be found in-house.
