Outward show is important. We would be publicly reprimanded if we didn't do the sign of the cross passing the church when I was a boy. In the 7th century, Muslims really needed to know who was on their side. Not much as changed as secularists today are all expected to make the same noises in public. The zealots demand it and the sheep obey.

Many churches, especially the catholics also stand and rise a lot during their services. Muslims use a prayer rug which they aim East while getting on their knees and supplicating fully with their bodies outstretched to god.

I’ve never understood the standing up and sitting down at RC services. Must check it out!
