A comment by Victoria reminded me of an article I just read that is scary. However, I understand the Chinese need for control. Imagine our country with 4 times the population (China is actually a bit smaller than we are but with 1.2 billion people). Given our increasing diversity with all the different cultures and norms/ideas about societies there is a huge need for control. Without control we would break out into tribalistic fighting. Just our crime rate has been lowered through the use of cameras everywhere. Nothing we take for granted is free and population growth has an enormous cost.
The Chinese, Russians etc. are far more about control than the U.S., though there are some in government that want more control or monitoring of the little people (little people is said as Harry Bryant does, he is Deckart's boss in the original movie 'Blade Runner'.
After 9/11 Bush signed into law things that, IMO, undermine our freedoms and many said 'if you're not doing anything wrong you have nothing to worry about'. Yeah right.
There was one man who did connect the dots - he was connecting the during the Clinton Administration and NOBODY fucking listened to him. He knew the Towers would be bombed again and he knew Bin Laden was a threat. In fact he was pretty much drummed out of the FBI.
He took a job in the private sector, in securty at the Twin Towers and he died on 9/11 helping people get out of the building.
The means were in place before 9/11 and none the safe guards put in place protected or alerted anyone to the school shooters.
Hell, government knew Russia was hacking our elections and we all know how THAT ended.
Of course this is common for paranoid dictatorial governments. But it can be and often is a way to control large populations.
We talked about this a lot in ZPG. Imagine a 2 bedroom house with 1 bath and a couple. The couple had some children and then extended families came to live. They had more children and pretty soon the house was overcrowded and the bathroom became a source of contention. Rules had to be made and there had to be some control for those that broke the rules. All our freedoms, and well being is negatively affected the more of us there are.
Somewhere I remember this site is promoting FFRF, the Humanist and knowledge about overpopulation. This is one such bit of information. As I said imagine Ellensburg (or a dense city like Seattle) quadrupling in size within it's boundaries. What would that look like? I always look to natural reasons for problems instead of simply pointing fingers.
@VictoriaNotes
@JackPedigo I was kinda off on a different rant. Like the bathroom anology.
@silverotter11 After rereading you reply I think I know what you were going for. I posted a cartoon about cussing - I think you will like it.
@JackPedigo LOL
It has helped in crime matters a great deal but it does cost one their personal freedom and I am willing to forego that right if it makes us all a little safer. I do not feel this is a dictatorship as I have traveled in a true dictators country and the difference is immense.You dare not to travel without your papers and you make your phone calls outside and away from your place of residence because you do not know who is listening.
I found 2 series on Netflix. One is some of the crazy (and often life saving) things that cameras see. The other is how criminals are caught through the use of cameras. The later one shows how criminals are actually caught attacking others. We live in a dangerous society.
