The virus may in the end have a positive effect on our country. Once we learn that many workers can work from home and that groups can operate well using electronics and the Internet, we may see a transformation away from old ways and a rapid acceptance of all that the Internet offers us. Alvin Toffler in his book 'The Third Wave', predicted this 40 years ago, and he said that it would be transformative. It could actually lead us to the practice of pure democracy

This could indeed have positive effects on students, white-collar workers, and the environment.

I am less optimistic about the long-term effects on blue-collar workers. As their needs are generally seen as less important than the needs of the office class, the more those needs differ, the further behind they will fall.

How many white-collar workers, for example, will vote to approve a transportation levy when they work comfortably from home? Yet, the grocery workers, mechanics, etc still need those roads and/or buses.

But, perhaps the needs of the medical workers will save us all! They also need good infrastructure to do their jobs - and this pandemic has taught us to appreciate them.
