What brings out the Know-It-All in you?

My daughter Claire played basketball from grades 4-8. For the longest time, Claire stood in the middle of the court, watching players run back-and-forth. I had to sit on her dad to keep him from screaming at her.

Finally someone stole the ball from Claire. Furious, Claire stole it back, dribbled down the court and did a left-hand hook into the basket. Score! People on both sides of the stands stood up and cheered. Claire is left-handed like her parents.

My hiking partner, Karen, talked me into watching "Alone" on Netflix. Ten survival experts, male and female, are dropped into the Arctic alone in late fall/early winter. Each chose 10 items. It's fun to watch bragging macho men get humbled.

"Don't walk on those leg-breaker rocks!" I yelled when a guy started across a terrible jumble of sharp rocks. "Find a safer place to get down to the water." Immediately he fell and broke his ankle. Had to be evacuated.

"Don't cut toward yourself!" I yelled at a woman. Sure enough, she got a deep cut in her hand. Later she set her shelter afire. This is hard to watch.

Two people refused to bring a hunting bow and arrows. These survival experts are starving, some eating nothing but berries for 24 days. People cry with relief when they snare a mouse or grouse. Protein.

Of course, I wouldn't make it on that show. Too thin. Karen says people who win each season start with extra fat.

A couple of things, though let me stress that I well understand I don't know ALL about anything. But I do know more than most about:

-Nutrition. I've been a fairly serious nutrition geek for 20+ years now. I can go into detail about how bad epidemiological nutrition research is , why meat especially fatty red meat is healthy, saturated fat is not bad for you, and the benefits of vegetables are way overstated, and the risks are understated to name just a few things. See?

-The actual function of our economic system, which is most properly described as corporate socialism: socialism for the corporations and their rich owners, ruthless capitalism for the masses.

Everything really. I tend to like to please people and feel that I am making a contribution, so I tend to try and add something when I can. But I sometimes wonder if it is not all too easy to overstep the line and become a boring know it all, or even worse a pedant. (Though for myself I secretly love a good pedant, there are one or too truly wonderful ones on this site, who always raise a smile.)

I wouldn’t make it on that either. Not too fat, except around the middle, and don’t have those survival skills.

Its important to have a wide variety of experiences, and then select the one that makes you feel the most smug. Then tell other people anout it.

Never been a know it all. It sucks, the unknown.

You may be thin but you would last a lot longer than I am I have that extra accessory in spades. If we were in that situation I would ask you to just hit me in the head and you would have enough for the whole time. Sounds gross but believe me it would be a great favor. I do not like the cold, not that cold. At least I would be contributing. On another level there would be another great reason to make this sacrifice, you help people further their lives by helping them go to school, I am in support of that, I would support that. Don't mean to gross you out but this is not going to happen, I am not joining some contest where this might be a possibility. Just a thought experiment.

Health, nutrition, exercise routines, losing weight... These are the things I know about most..

As for that show, take a couple of weeks beforehand and fatten up with good high calorie foods like pasta🙂

Listening to people spout off these days about politics, pandemics and all the other things they know absolutely nothing about - except for what they have been spoon fed. Listening to one news station has now made them experts in things that - up until a couple of years ago - they would say things like "ohhh....I don't follow any of that or I don't get involved in any of that". Why - now of all times - have they decided their opinions are the only ones that matter? I can't take much more.....my be quiet and walk away instinct is quickly dissipating. I want to grab them by the shoulders and shout "listen to me"..... hahahahahahaha ok....breathe in, breathe out 😉

The subjects in which I’ve dug the deepest 🙂 Can’t talk sports 😀 ...dad was/ is a Sportaholic.. Don’t follow movies … just end up watching old stuff that’s proven itself.. Fashion? ..never; know what I like ..with practical topping the list.

Have learned a lot of politics, in there with the grinding of eyes, tongues, and organs.. Not always pretty, or rewarding, but worthwhile.

Have another tallent (far more admired than politics) ..but might lead some undesirables to me … dang it..

Once knew my birds, till moving 3K miles from them 😕 ..once close & familiar with the flora & fauna of the PNW (same sorry face)..

And, know what being an Atheist feels like 😉
