I grew up in a staunchly Catholic home in a Catholic neighborhood, and 8 years of parochial school. A a young lad, I was determined to read the Bible cover to cover, but needed to ask my parents t buy me one. They never read or owned one. Reading the Bible convinced me it was all bullshit, and never made it all the way through.
Interestingly, I never heard people (other than priests/pastors) quoting the Bible until I started listening to non-believer podcasts and this site.
My question is what role did the Bible play in your current state of belief?
Catholic upbringing but not strict bad enough though
Similar in our case. We had to go to church every Sunday, fish on Friday’s and something on every holiday. They were strict as parents but didn’t jam religion down our throats. I started deconverting ~12ish and they tried keeping me in the flock, but also allowed me to spread my wings. I was the only one of my sibs to break away from the church.
In the old testament the men who wrote it contradict themselves too many to be believable by any well educated person.
Isn’t the Old Testament part and parcel to the Torah and Koran ( I’m no religious expert)
Seems like they could come up with some original material....
may i suggest that we in the west are really not even qualified to read the Bible, at least not from the right perspective; a westerner will only come to the conclusion that the Bible has contradictions, is erroneous, etc

Perhaps. There are biblical scholars all over the world and thousands of sects that use all or part of it with slightly differing interpretations. Each claiming a superior view. I suppose some of these are better than others.
iMHO. At the end of the day, a perfect pile of dung, is still just a pile of dung
@Canndue well i might suggest ignoring anyone who claims a superior view, since thats what the Bible says do, and i personally run screaming from most "Biblical scholars," but wadr you seem to have put yourself in with them, @ your last sentence there? Me, i don't know anything. Ever...lol
No son of man may die for another's sins is total dung iyo? hmm
Interesting, You claim no knowledge, yet you are convinced you know what others think or do. Seems rather disingenuous. No offense, just an observation. If you choose a life of nothingness, no problem, that is your right. I choose otherwise, which is also my right.
There is a story in bible in which Jesus was walking with his disciples and when he reached near a fig tree he saw it bore no fruits and he cursed the fig tree. I don't why but I was really sympathetic towards that fig tree. Why should it be cursed just because it didn't bore fruit when Jesus was walking down there. Maybe it would be full of fruits next season. I hear this story usually in every speech during Sunday holymass . Priest preaching the need to be good to bear fruit otherwise God would cut it down. Is this the kind of message religion is preaching? Is this is the basic understanding of their morality ?. Being a Christian for many years, studying bible , has made be a better Atheist . I now properly understand why I should not follow any religion.
I've done that. Because I have, I'd like to save you some time that you will otherwise never get back.
Ask first, "Where does this book come from and why should I believe it is true?"
This will give you a good start:

But if you are determined to read it, feel free .... just trying to help.
I think everyone should read it, it would drive so many out of the binds of religion....
@Canndue Why bother to read it (I did BTW) if you know it comes from ancient storytellers? I always felt I'd wasted the time reading the damned thing when I finally investigated how it came together. It's origins make it pretty obvious it is a work of fiction (and not a very good one.).
aw, i do feel for you guys. mythology is hard to abide in this day and age huh; esp for those who have eaten the fruit of the tree of knowledge. But you don't read the Bible, the Bible reads you i guess
@Normanbites certainly don’t need to. Historical analysis is better, just not sure the Bible thumper is open to objective analysis.
@Canndue Arguing with Christians about what the buy bull says is like that old saying about wrestling with pigs .... you gain nothing, you get all dirty and the pig likes it.
@Normanbites I totally agree with you. My point is if they actually read the thing, it is likely to steer them away of their own volition. If it strengthens their beliefs, so be it, it is their choice.
My question is what role did the Bible play in your current state of belief?
Belief means accept something as true.
As to the "role" biblical text has played, I have found that it is the best source for understanding a few peculiar experiences I have personally had. Such as the reason I left Christianity because of experiences that then lead me into more research of biblical text to understand how it points to Jesus character as being Angelic lord of host Lucifer the devil.
I do not care to use the word "belief" or its counterpart "disbelief ". As the biblical text purports, it is based on eye witness testimony of various events. I have found that there are some things that corroborate with the biblical text. I can then know what things are given verfication and accept those things as true. For other things, they would be left unverified. For, the things verfied, I would have a knowing or a knowledge of, not just a "belief".
