Trump's Legal Defense: Incompetence or Confidence?

I grew up reading stories of how white people got away with crimes against black people in the south all the time. How when forced with political pressure to have a trial, it was perfunctory as no one involved actually believed they would be found guilty. Everyone knew knew the fix was in, but they had to go through the motions to give the impression of fairness to the rest of the country. People could look back and say "At least there was a trial." while ignoring the dishonest process with a forgone conclusion.

Apparently now we get to see those same racist, white supremacist tactics used by the US Senate. Trump's lawyers are either incredibly incompetent or not trying because they know they are going to win no matter what they present.
