Key words: "...remotely sane..."* Unfortunately, this has been going on for some time and has only gotten worse. Glad population was mentioned but one element was missing. All sources for population/activity needed to be included. Many countries in Europe actually have a negative population rate and the US as almost on par to having no real gain. Unfortunately, corporations saw a possible profit source in hiring desperate people willing to work under bad conditions with low pay and few, if any, benefits. Very few environmental groups are willing to talk about this but there are a few. Sustainable means no population growth and no expanded carbon footprint. Births and immigration must equal deaths and emigration. Technology too often only makes matters worse.

Too few people care and the majority of the world's big corporations are more interested in profit. Add to that the seemingly wide spread climate change deniers and anti-science mentality of so many people as well as the ever increasing world population. Things will continue to get worse and the long-term outlook for humanity is not very optimistic in my opinion.

Compulsive consumerism is encouraged, acquisition of more and more material wealth and possessions is seen as admirable ...even considered an essential yardstick to measure success in life. Until we change our frames of reference nothing is going to change and we are heading straight to our own mass extermination. Sorry to be gloomy...but it is glaringly obvious to me.
