Religion is an "assault" on education.
Raised with a Catholic education, I tend to agree with you.
Now I’m a recovering Catholic trying hard to educate myself about the hypocrisy of religion and the clergy
@HelenRoseBuck My sister in law went to Catholic schools in upstate NY, and other than the religious stuff, she is a non-believer now, she felt the academic part of her schooling was good. Was that your experience also? When l made that statement l was thinking more of the public schools.
@Sticks48 loaded question. Grade school was not particularly good and my parents were never involved. My mother was first generation Sicilian American. When she met my dad, a divorced father with a third grade education, they clicked and he was told in no uncertain terms that a marriage could only happen if their children were raised Catholic.
When I entered high school I was given an aptitude test. The nun/counselor told me that I was not college material and I should, upon graduation, get a clerical job until such time as I married then I could quit work. Lovely.
My two sisters had a similar experience. One was told she could go into some kind of medical technician job. And the other was told the only thing she could do with her life is get a job on the line at the GM plant. She wouldn’t make a good mother or wife either.
Both of these women were quite successful in their careers. The first built a career in marketing without a degree and she had 3 children. The second earned her Masters in social work and married a research scientist. They have two children.
My story is a bit more complicated but I did eventually go to college .
Long story - short / no I did not get a good education in the Catholic school system but I feel they did instill a certain amount of humanity and care for our fellow man. Example: my school in Ohio hosted Cesar Chavez in an assembly. It was an eye opener! I didn’t eat grapes for years!
@HelenRoseBuck What a story.
I have no idea how that would be done as he was never there n the first place.
