In the UK, hundreds of paramedics have reported being physically abused or verbally abused while working to serve the public, new data has revealed. More than 1,600 paramedics from across the country said they feared for their own safety or had been threatened while on duty. 27 Jul 2021

I have two friends who used to be paramedics. They quit. Incidents like this eventually got them. Just too much...

You have no idea where they have just been..
The time i went to my first paediatric cardiac arrest.. 6 year old.. boy... same age as my son was... lying on the floor ...his mom screaming don't let him die... problem was he already had... i carried him down to ambulance running as fast as i could carrying a 6 yr old... the ramp wasnt down so i jumped up onto the back ripping a muscle in my hip but not feeling it at the time...we pumped on his tiny chest hoping....praying for something but we knew... his mom just kept saying please don't let him die over and over... as i lay him on the trolley in resus at the children's hospital and handed over to the doctors and nurses of which there must have been 30 i stepped back... i looked at the mom... and the nan who had arrived and must have gone through all the red lights we did to get there so fast i saw devastation.. pale wet faces with a look you will never ever forget...like someone had reached in and stolen the very soul that made them who they were... i put my arm around the mom and squeezed... she prob didnt even feel it......after a short while.... the doctor called it and everyone stopped...it went quiet for about a second until she realised... i had to walk out the door...id taken about 3 or 4 steps up the corridor when i heard the most painful soul destroying scream you really couldn't imagine.. u may think u have seen films or tv with people crying or screaming..trust me when i say a real genuine one is nothing like the films... every single hair stuck up on my body.. i couldn't hold it in anymore i raced through the waiting room so noone would see me cry but it was too late.. the tears were already streaming..but as i got outside i sobbed.. i really sobbed.....i still see his face now... i still hear her scream now... that call took a little bit of me..and every child one since
Next time u see a crew.. smile at em....
. you have no idea where they have just been
When ur out and get pissed and feel like being a dick..or a comedian and the crew doesnt think ur funny......
you have no idea where they have just been
And if u see a crew grabbing some food don't moan or whinge....
...
..you have no idea where they have just been
This isnt copied or pasted from Somewhere else this is a real job i went to... nothing actually out the ordinary...i don't work for the ambulance service anymore which breaks my heart... the last year has been hard work coming to terms with it...
You have no idea where i have just been.

Curiously I've only known 3 ambos or EMR's in my life and all were injured from or through their occupations. One was in a wheelchair from lifting & two were overstressed. All probably had PTSD.

We civilians rarely have the imagination & foresight to comprehend.

Hi there. Through occupations like paramedics and firefighters, all they see all day everyday is the negative, tragic side of life. Who could possibly not be affected by it? Plus they risk themselves to save complete strangers. That's not something I could do purely for high wages.

@Ryo1 EMR's require huge reserves of empathy, compassion, dedication & intelligence to do their jobs.
Sadly there are too many stupid people about. Are you familiar with Cipolla's 5 basic laws of human stupidity which defines intelligent people as those who do something to benefit themself and everyone else. Sounds like EMR people fit that category far more than politicians do.

@FrayedBear

A controversial definition of stupidity Lol

Always and inevitably, everyone underestimates the number of stupid individuals in circulation.
The probability that a certain person (will) be stupid is independent of any other characteristic of that person.
A stupid person is a person who causes losses to another person or to a group of persons while himself deriving no gain and even possibly incurring losses.
Non-stupid people always underestimate the damaging power of stupid individuals. In particular, non-stupid people constantly forget that at all times and places, and under any circumstances, to deal and/or associate with stupid people always turns out to be a costly mistake.
A stupid person is the most dangerous type of person.

There isn’t a year that goes by that I’ve been assaulted. We get PD response to most of our jobs, but that has been lagging in the past year(yes because of COVID). Everyone I know has a story… being punched, kicked, and worse (think Miggs from Silence of the Lambs). And to answer a question posed by someone else: no, most of us don’t have body cameras. They become a hindrance because the footage would need to be attached to every report. That gets prohibitive.

Hi there. Thanks ever so much for your insight. I could never ever do your job. Your job is meaningful and my hat off to you for your 100% commitment to it. Take care.

Long ago I had a psychiatric nurse friend on psychiatric emergency call outs in Ryde Sydney. It was well paid but I think that he only lasted 2½ years before having to leave the job because of the stress.

Bodycams for ambulance staff after rise in attacks [bbc.co.uk]

What is it like in the US?

@Ryo1 Not as widespread apparently, at least there's no mention of it in the media. They are often escorted by police.

@Ryo1 Of course there's this. [nbcboston.com]
