We had three feet of hard snow in 2011, and the local rabbits must have been running about on top. Because when the thaw came, all the shrubs and smaller trees had been stripped of their bark in a ring between three and four feet from the ground.
That sure rings true.
I've seen plants in urban southern AZ where gardeners tried to protect their plants from rabbits but accidentally left gaps. The rabbits explored the gaps thoroughly and stripped the plants 'to the bone' where they could -- leaving distinct patterns matching the fencing or whatever the gardeners used.
You'd think the rabbits didn't have anything better to do. Ha, ha.
