This could be under Pacific NW or music or history (if we had such a group) but politics is the best fit. An early, outspoken black, most have never heard of, Paul Robeson turned out to be a giant of a man. I found this piece very inspiring. He even visited Scotland and sang for the mine workers. He died in 1976 from complications of a stroke. [crosscut.com]
I've admired him since I was a child. THAT VOICE! And his dignity.
Both Robson's and Sinatra's versions of Ol' Man River are favorites of mine.
Too much history too soon forgotten or not taught.
It can be emotional. I like to look at the comments.
@JackPedigo Sinatra and Nelson Riddle due a good job with the emotions.
@silverotter11 Good but something is missing. The deep voice and the fact it is sung by a white.
@JackPedigo Since Sinatra was a huge fighter for civil rights I give him credit for singing the song so well. Plus Nelson Riddle's arrangement was really good.
There are so many great voices that have sung this song thses two are just my favs.
Mr. Robeson was a great man, thinker, and writer. Reading anything about him is not a waste of time.
