A certain person’s penchant for a man of an indubitably loathsome character reminds me of the trump phenomenon, which in its turn reminded me of the Simpson case and his widespread support. The more obviously loathsome the man, the more some people love him, and, at least in trump's case, indeed worship him. I suppose the thinking is, yes, he’s scum, but he’s our scum. It’s actually a rather common phenomenon. But I don’t know that I will ever understand it.

I think it's because "likes attract" . Most think opposites attract, . . . .not true. People who enjoy seeing others humiliated, or hurt by someone are attracted to that someone, because they themselves have been hurt and humiliated. Mean-spirited people love trump for that reason, because he consistently attacks others.

The Ancient Greeks had a word for it. "The lover of evil." Some people have a hatred of mainstream society, and its values, probably because they are unwilling to make the effort to engage with it or them. But secretly they feel guilty about that, so they make heros out of antisocial people, so that they can pretend to themselves that they do have some values, just alternate ones, and that the fault is with society.
