When we went there as a bunch of work friends in the early 90s one of the guys took his pre-teen boys and they weren't ready. He ended up carrying three packs up the trail. (Of course being the sort he was he refused to let us help. Ha, ha, I guess)
When we got to the top we met two couples living in a canvas tent drinking wine out of bottles. Wow.
I wanted to ask how they got that stuff up there -- did they use a helicopter?
But we didn't talk to them.
The trip did teach me something about hiking in WA. We saw maybe 20 people in one weekend in that little valley. I grew up in northern AZ where you could go out 50 miles and know you were the only person there for 30 miles or so. It's much more a social experience in the NW -- it took some acclimatization for me.
It did make me more aware of the customs of people there. That same company used to close its doors every spring and vacation together out in Puget Sound for a week digging clams -- definitely a new attitude for me. Ha, ha, again.
