LINK Chinese isn't (technically) a language - YouTube

Although there are 5 major Chinese dialects, there are actually more than 60 Chinese dialects ... All of them use the same pictogram writing system, even though the spoken languages are often very different.

Of course having a written language which is not phonetic, does not help to stop the spoken language from diverging.
