LINK Mary Trump blasts her uncle as ‘leader of pro-death party’ -- The Hill

By Miranda Nazzaro - 06/18/24

Mary Trump ripped her uncle, former President Trump, as the “leader of the pro-death party” Monday, while pointing to his “cynical embrace” of war weaponry.

“The harsh reality is that Donald is a serious national security threat to the American people. This is a life-or-death election. And my uncle is the death candidate. Let’s choose life, shall we?” Mary Trump wrote in Monday’s edition of her newsletter, “The Good in Us.”

Her newsletter discussed the irony of Trump’s response to the Supreme Court ruling last week that invalidated the Trump administration’s prohibition on bump stocks, a device that can be attached to a semiautomatic firearm to allow them to fire more rapidly.

Shortly after the court’s ruling, Trump spokesperson Karoline Leavitt told the Washington Examiner the decision “should be respected.”

“Friday was a terrible day for those of us who don’t want to die — and don’t want our kids to die — at the hands of mass murderers wielding weapons of war, modified or otherwise. The irony, of course, is that the Trump-era bump stock ban was one of the very, very few decent things the Trump administration managed to accomplish,” Mary Trump wrote Monday.

“And what was Donald’s reaction to the decision? Well, for the first time in a long time, he said he respects a court decision. Then he bragged about getting the NRA’s [National Rifle Association] endorsement,” she added.

The Supreme Court ruling ended the nationwide ban on bump stock devices.

The Trump administration banned bump stock devices in 2018 following the 2017 Las Vegas mass shooting, in which the shooter used guns equipped with bump stocks to kill 60 people and injure hundreds of others.

Mary Trump, a longtime critic of her uncle, argued the high court ruling, coupled with the former president’s reported response to it, served as “powerful reminders that the leader of the Republican[s] is the death candidate.”

“It’s not just Donald’s cynical embrace of weapons of war that should alarm us — after all, this has been a mainstream Republican position for years,” she wrote. “He was also willing to turn a global pandemic into a wedge issue. And during the horrors of the first two waves of COVID, when as many as 5,000 Americans were dying every day, he played golf and bragged about his television ratings.”

The Hill reached out to the Trump campaign for further comment.
