According to Investopedia, Twitter "earns 85% or more of its revenue from advertising," and the rest, I gather, comes from selling data-mining. My guess would be that the mind-boggling insanity treats shareholders' dividends rather nicely through sheer numbers of views, and plenty of other companies will pay handsomely to know who's saying what about his tweets. So basically, capitalism.
