I do like dogs - not as much as cats - but it's some dogs owners I have a problem with. Just this morning I was taking a nice refreshing walk when I heard a screen door slam and a second later felt something wet pushing up into my arm pit. It was a huge dog, looked part doberman part German shepard. I kept walking and he just stood there, not following, but watching me very closely. It shocked me a bit, especially because just recently in my city a woman was charged for her 2 dogs attacking 4 kids walking by her home. All 4 had to be treated at the hospital for injuries.

I just feel if people can't be responsible enough to control their dogs they should not have them. I have yet to hear about a domestic cat attacking anyone. Cats only attack in self defense, which is why I never try to pick up another person's cat no matter how cute it is.

I with you. When I lived in the city, a woman walking down the sidewalk with a pack of about 6 dogs and some not on leash. One started after my cat that was outside, so I chased it and yelled at it. The woman said something to me and I reminded her about the leash law.

In the past, I've had words with a nasty person that had been letting their little dog out in the morning to poop on other people's lawns and walkways. She would be careful to look around before she called the dog home. So I watched and waited, then warned her with the written law and my word that I'd turn her in. She stopped.

I always seem to have a neighbor that neglects their constantly barking dog. I wish that the city would take the complaints seriously and fine these mfers bigtime to make them be responsible. I don't understand how people can be so unconcious!

I do believe dogs make excellent pets, unfortunately a lot of people do not make good owners. And that's bad for the dog as well as other people.

Sadly, in these cases the dogs and other people are the ones paying for the irresponsibility of dog owners. When I lived in the city, some dogs were left loose in the yards and they followed and harassed people walking by. I used to walk my own dogs and encounter loose dogs. I called bylaw and all they did was give the owners a call and left a message. They were still loose after that. I called again and bylaw said they would go visit these people. Nothing happened. I had to walk elsewhere. Now living in the country, all the farmers let their dogs roam free. A couple of dogs recently killed someone's chickens. Dogs are often found sitting around in the middle of the road you're trying to drive on. Dog forbid you hit them, then you're an ass for not driving carefully. If you complain about roaming dogs, they tell you you shouldn't live in the country.

I love dogs. I work with dogs. I work with hundreds of dogs of all kinds. I know they are animals still and can act unpredictably. I make sure mine are kept indoors or in my fenced yard, leashed when out. My cats too are all indoor cats (because roaming cats can cause issues as well).

Oh, and yes, domestic cats can and do attack for no reason sometimes. I work in boarding and have encountered regular kitty customers that run to you and attack you when you aren't doing anything.

One of the saddest things I ever saw was this cat in a pet store that had been mawled by a dog. He was missing a front leg, an ear, and blind in one eye. And you are right about cats attacking, my son has a male that did that until they got him neutered. Now he's as friendly as can be.

Where I lived in the country, you could shoot a dog on your property. Happened more often than it should have! If your dog killed chickens or sheep, that could add up to a lot of money for the dog owner. Other side? my brother hit a cow that got out and got a new car.

@Ray13 One of the attack cats is a neutered male and he had gone for boarding at the same place for years and years. Not sure why he hated us so much. LOL. I had a cat there once who jumped on my back while I was scooping his litter. He dug in with all claws and slid down my back. That was not a lovely experience.

@Hathacat It's the same here. You could shoot them but people won't. One of my dogs came from a rural location where shooting dogs on your property was permitted. She was being shot at while roaming so now she's scared of all loud popping or booming sounds.

@graceylou The owners fault. The dog doesn't know better. I hope yours wasn't wounded!

@Hathacat The previous owner didn't want the dogs in the house. When we got her we asked what brand food she was on, and we were told she ate from neighbourhood garbage and owner's leftovers. I was shocked. She was never shot but the owner ended up locking the dogs up in a shed to keep from being shot at.

@graceylou I bet you can imagine what I would like to do to that person....

@graceylou - You certainly have had a lot of experience with cats. It's great that you care about them that much. At least with a cat you have a pretty good fighting chance. If a huge dog attacks there could be some very serious injuries, or even death. That's why police have them.

@Ray13 I have sustained many injuries from dogs. I’ve been bitten numerous times. I’ve become a little desensitized when it comes to injuries from dogs. All of us at that boarding facility are the same as me. But we all would shudder when that one cat comes back for boarding. I’ve also done a lot of work with feral cats. Some of these guys would rip your face right off.

@Hathacat It’s a common thing to do in remote rural communities. They would not be the only ones doing it.

Yes that really shouldn't be happening. If the dog is permitted off leash due to having excellent manners - that is one thing. But walking up to a stranger and cold nosing them? No.

Pretty sure there are leash laws everywhere. Frankly if you have a camera phone with you I'd take a photo if there is a next time.

I do have a camera phone, and next time (hope there isn't) I'll do that. I was so startled all I could think about was getting away.
