I fully agree. Procreating isn't an altruistic act. The breeders of the world, by and large, tell the childless that we're selfish for choosing to forego parenthood. Don't get me wrong — there's a real benefit to me in terms of finances and stress by not having kids. But there's also a huge moral imperative, I think, in not bringing a person into the world that necessarily can't consent to its own existence.
How does one gain consent from an unborn non-being, though?
@misternatureboy That's my point: consent can't be given, so it is not within my rights to impose life on another.
@resserts So, in a truly ethical world, life shouldn't exist?
@misternatureboy What I'm referring to doesn't apply to plants, animals, and so forth, but in terms of humans, I think I have a moral obligation to not bring life into the world. For most people, procreating is merely amoral because they've never contemplated the potential harm they're doing to a new person (as opposed to not procreating, which does no harm to the nonexistent person). I don't apply my standard to anyone other than myself, because I don't know whether others have thought it through or not. It's a moral mandate to which I hold only myself.
@resserts Gotcha. I totally see why one should decide to not procreate for ethical reasons. I wanted to understand the scope of your application. Not at Cult Level--check!
@misternatureboy Haha, no, I'm definitely not Heaven's-Gating this philosophy. ?
Thank you! I've always maintained the argument that having a child to feel fulfilled is just as selfish as not having a child to have the time and money to do whatever the heck I please to feel fulfilled!
