The Spartans had a law that punished any warrior who returned home without his shield, because he/she ( it was sometimes she ) lost it in battle. Not the sword or the spear etc. just the shield, because the shield was what protected your neighbors in formation, and Spartan warriors were encouraged to take cover behind the next fighters shield as a tactical ploy.
