"Gardening" isn't really required but in the last 2 days I've picked 2 gallons of chokecherries. The trees/bushes are getting a bit out of control so I will be pruning them and cutting out some suckers as I don't want them to take over the entire yard. The first one came up on it's own, likely from a bird helping it across the street. This is the first year I've harvested from the trees. It is a crop that must be harvested expeditiously as the birds love these little, sour treats. They are able to wipe out much of a crop once they get onto it's presence.
I'm giving most or all away this year as I don't really want to make jelly. I have some from previous year, from the hedge that grew across the street. They do make good jelly. There are a number of other things to be made with them but I'm not inclined to do so. These include sun drying them then grinding them, seed and all into a type of flour. Sorry, more labor intensive than I'm drawn to. Too bad @kenriley, if you lived down the street, I'd give you a bucket of them.
Choke cherries are plentiful on my land, I love the syrup they make on pancakes or waffles.
That sounds good. I've used the jelly on pancakes before, it was quite good, syrup would be nice, soaks in a bit rather than sitting on top. I might keep one batch of these for myself and make syrup. Didn't need to make more jelly this year. How do you "store" the syrup?
@DotLewis I always stored it in sealers in the normal canning method. It's pretty tasty on ice cream, too.
Interesting. Never previously encountered them though they look a little like a cross between black and redcurrants on steroids. Can they like pomegranite be turned into molasses? (Great for accompanying meat and fruit).
I've only made jelly but I saw a recipe for chokecherry syrup. Pretty much the same as jelly but with less pectin. The flavor is a little tart , different than "cherries" and could serve for uses beyond pancakes.

Posted by KateOahuI saw some pretty flowers on a walk today. I’d never seen a white Hibiscus before. And I do not know what the pink flowers are.
