The pope is supposed to have a direct line to God? Did God not know that the Catholic Church was punishing gays since day one? Seems to me that God is just a reflection of human morality and he changes with the tide of morality.

Well sure! If you insist on being all logical...
Funny the Vatican has had to tacitly acknowledge the falseness of papal infallability, doubly so since the Pope ameritis was caught disagreeing with the current pope.

Homosexuality was not really considered all that serious of a sin for the first 1000 years of Christianity. In fact until I think about the 9th Century, the Christian church performed same sex ceremonies, which were kind of like weddings, but just not called weddings. Source: "Christianity, Social Tolerance and Homosexuality" by John Boswell, University of Chicago press. It's been a while since I read it, so my dates may be a little off, but he facts are correct.
