So True... at lease as far as perception goes.
It takes the eyes some time to adjust to a light being turned off suddenly, thus the darkness seems more intense. Where as, if the eye was allowed to change gradually as the natural light changed, and without the influence of any artificial light, vision would be less obscured and thus the darkness wouldn't seem so intense.
Given enough time, however, both situations would settle on the same level of "darkness".
Reality is all about perception, so... make of that what you will.
The reverse is true, also. I lived in a notoriously bitter and rude city for a time. When I moved I had a glaring comparison between how rude people were from that city, and a much deeper appreciation for the kindness in my new town. I am so glad there was such a drastic difference.
