If your IQ is 120 or higher then you have a 90% chance of being the smartest person in a conversation with any other person on the planet. Granted there are a lot of disclaimers that go with standard IQ tests but in general terms, the higher your number the more likely you are going to find yourself having what you believe is a perfectly normal conversation with another person who doesn't have a clue what you are talking about. Atheists are on average more intelligent because you have to think in order to see through the lie of religion but is this a positive or a negative? Are smart people happier than less intelligent people or is ignorance bliss?

I don't think I'm stupid but I sure can't figure out what is happening with my alerts on this site.

For a while last week I was getting double alerts.

@Surfpirate I'm not getting doulbe alerts. I am getting everyone's comments but NONE of the original posts. Example would be this post, never got the post you made only the comments to the post. Hense I have hundreds of alerts of comments but not new posts.

@silverotter11 I wonder if changing your alert settings would make a difference? Change them and then try changing them back to your normal setting and see if it makes a difference.

So how is IQ measured?

Yogi-Ramon Level 4 Nov 10, 2018

The more important question would be what does an IQ test actually test for and what are the cultural biases that are intrinsic in these tests. The ability to learn, the ability to reason, the ability to problem solve and more often than not these days; the ability to do a proper Google search and then separate the valid information from the bullshit. 🙂

A lot of the time it's not a problem. But it can lead to serious frustration at times. And I get damned tired of saying, "I told you so."

Well . The less u know , the more content and the more " happy " u are . The moment u want to know more , and the moment u have the ability and desire to research and understand more , that's the moment that grey hair appear . Knowledge and critical thinking comes w worries . Worries does not equal a " bliss ".
Personally I am near retarded I think . There is no other explanation for some of my past choices or some of my fears or some of my shortcomings on nowadays . Well . At least I dident reproduced so been retarded affects mostly just me . I am ok w that ?

The answer to your question is, yes.

ugly Level 7 Nov 9, 2018

@powder Then, the answer is no.

No....I don't have the study, but I read that more intelligent people typically have a higher rate of depressed and anxiety than those of average intelligence. The reasoning inferred from the data was higher intelligence means you are more likely to see the hypocrisy and BS being slung, thus more frustrated at the ignorant masses that don't seem to have a clue (I'm paraphrasing of course). You are also less likely to be placated by mindless entertainment and the consumerism mentality.

jondspen Level 7 Nov 9, 2018

In my experience I would have to say yes to most of the above but I will have to disagree with the depression link to higher intelligence, anxious yes but depressed no. If you have the brains to see some of the ridiculously insane shit that goes on in this world then you would have to be insane not to be anxious about it but that doesn't mean you should be depressed about it.

@Surfpirate From what I remember, the depression comes from a feeling of hopelessness, as well as feeling alone or an outsider. I can't find the paper I remember reading, but a search via DuckDuckGo for "intelligent people more likely to be depressed" gives these links as the top results. The third link specifically talks about the isolation aspect.

I'm not going to give the number, but yes, I was tested over 120.
To be honest it is a lot of times more of a curse that anything.
By that I mean I seem to way over think things, sometimes i can't fall asleep because I'm working out some problem in my head. Thinking all the time makes it hard to focus on one thing at a time.

One of the smartest things I've learned, is that there is always some one smarter.
Which I love, because I love nothing more that learning.

At the end of the day it is just a number and the tests are slanted towards certain methods of thinking but I agree that there is always someone smarter out there. I have found that after 140 the personalities tend to get a little out there, interesting but out there.

Grad school taught me two things - (1) I hate school LOL and (2) I am woefully ignorant about so many things, so I should put my pride and arrogance in check.

@jondspen Exactly the same for me about school. Well public schools anyway, I did at a private learning center enjoy it very much, they taught much differently than regular schools, in that it was mostly about critical thinking.

And I agree with your #2,
The more I've learned, the more I find there so much I don't know.

@TristanNuvo ,jondspen Yup. The more we see the last we know. Say hey!

Made me think of this.

Carlin was great.

Too smart for our own good maybe!

Too smart for their own good should I choose to be evil.

I find I am so intelligent I can do two things at once.My mouth is usually saying the complete opposite to what my brain is thinking .

Xanadutoo Level 7 Nov 9, 2018

I can relate to that although in a much smaller way. 🙂

I definitely say ignorance is bliss. Smart people are often seen as arrogant even when they're not!

SukiSue Level 8 Nov 9, 2018

I am so happy, now I know why .thanks lol

I've been accused of being arrogant for a bullet point rebuttal of a very stupid argument, that was one of my favourite cases of being accused of arrogance. I'm sorry but I just gave them a step by step explanation detailing why their current course of action would lead to pain and suffering for them and they feel I am being arrogant? Well excuse me while you drive yourself off the proverbial cliff. lol

@Surfpirate people can be jealous of people that are more intelligent than they are. Many times I state facts I'm accused of being arrogant. ☹️ It's as though they believe my point of going to look for the correct facts made me want to one-up someone. But in reality all I wanted to do is state the facts and correct the falsity so people would not be misled. This happens a lot arguing politics. Facts mean nothing to some people. This is what I think makes us intelligent beings even more than an IQ measure. this has been happening a lot lately as I argue the need to cover pre-existing conditions under health insurance. Many conservatives who are against including pre-existing conditions keep telling me I'm just trying to one-up them. I'm really thinking of friends who died from cancer before the ACA was put in place because they couldn't afford treatment. ?

@SukiSue Those Conservatives love to quote Cain's reply in the Old Testament 'Am I my brother's keeper?' as a support for their position but they fail to realize that the statement was the most damning thing Cain did in the eyes of the Holy Moly. As usual they miss the point and refuse correction from those arrogant atheists who actually bothered to read their stupid book. 😉

@SukiSue OMG...so glad I read this. I too get accused of the same thing, and I have often wondered, "What about the way I present my argument is coming off arrogant?" Not saying there isn't room to improve my communications skills, but glad to know my suspicions are perceptions shared by others.

@SukiSue I Google loads just incase I am wrong but being a man I am always right.
